One of the pillars of i2b Global Inc.'s system integration methodology is selection of the proper tools to address the business requirements of their clients. i2b believes that IT service providers must deliver solutions which first and foremost fulfill the business functional requirements and secondly are cost effective.

Technology Trends
Before i2b started looking for technology platform for their IT solutions they had to carefully consider the feature/function they were looking for in a new technology platform. That meant, in some cases, anticipation of future technology trends contrasted with deciding whether businesses would be able to take advantage of them in a cost effective manner.
i2b only considered those development platforms that would provide a full set of development tools for implementing these new technologies. Their research concluded that there will be two major technology trends in coming years:
No. 1: Wireless connectivity will go mainstream.
By the end of 2003, there will be proliferation of wireless Internet connectivity using the 802.11b standard. The IBM/AT&T wireless initiative and the emergence of national bandwidth-sharing arrangements between regional players and big players like TMobile will give organizations the choice of many different partners for wireless services. This will translate to development of Internet based applications, which will enable users to interact with a broad range of smart devices via the Web while ensuring that the user and not the application, controls the interaction.
Corporate systems such as portals, electronic mail systems, and Web sites will need to be able to support wireless access from both laptops and PDAs.
No. 2: Web services will become the dominant integration technology.
Latest surveys indicate that IT budgets will not grow significantly in 2003. The need to do more with less will drive companies to find economical ways to reuse their existing technologies and platforms rather than purchasing new software. At the same, in order to stay competitive, the corporation will require that their IT departments will lower operating costs, add functionality to their Web Sites, connect internal systems, connect with customers, and connect with other businesses. All these tasks can be cost effectively resolved by adopting Web Service technology.

Selection
"Given the recent cutbacks in IT budgets, it is obvious that cost is a major determinant when selecting a development platform for IT solutions. We have compared cost of solutions based on both the Java/J2EE technology based on IBM WebSphere 4.0, versus similar solutions based on Microsoft's® .NET platform. The comparison showed that Visual Studio .NET offers significant advantages over IBM WebSphere 4.0 for building and integrating XML-based Web Services. These advantages will save organizations both time and money as they embark on integration projects using XML Web Services. Specifically, the comparison demonstrated that IBM WebSphere 4.0 requires 145% more manual coding than Visual Studio .NET for a typical Web Service. The comparison also demonstrated that for a single-server deployment, WebSphere 4.0 Advanced Edition costs over 10 times more than Microsoft .NET ($64,000 vs. $5998). Finally, it demonstrated that for a 4-server clustered deployment configuration, WebSphere 4.0 Advanced Edition costs over 15 times more than Microsoft .NET ($384,000 vs. $23,992). We have also reviewed the new Visual Studio .NET and we believe it as an excellent RDE. The high level of integration with IIS and SQL Server is excellent and will help reducing development time, therefore further reducing cost of ownership of our IT solutions, thus increasing our customer's ROI." Conclusion
When faced with those compelling cost numbers and the fact that the Microsoft® .NET platform allows for building quality software system similar to solutions based on Java/J2EE technology i2b has made the strategic decision to adopt .NET as their primary development platform. We will use .NET platform primarily to offer IT solutions for small and medium size Internet Applications but Java/J2EE based solutions will also be offered to large corporations where large user base, high transaction volume and response time justifies the cost of such systems.
